Beside special arrangements (friends), you can stay at a hotel or motel, or in a Bed and Breakfast (B&B). Hotels/motels close to the Stanford campus are listed on SLAC's maps page. UC Berkeley Housing and Dining Service also created such a list for hotels/motels close to UC Berkeley campus. Sometimes, you can also find lodging in the classified ads. There is an on-line edition of the Oakland/Berkeley Classified Flea Market. However, you might want to check by yourself before buying... Being able to move around is also important. Remember! This is America. Public transportation is not always very convenient, and it may be a good idea to rent a car especially when you are looking for housing. It is convenient to rent a car with the companies that have an office at SFO airport. These companies usually have discounts for people travelling by plane (fly and drive, as well as frequent flyer's discounts).
