Although an established American model, alumni organizations exist in
Europe as well. Still the many stakeholders have various interests. With
the change of guard at the alumni organizations of the ETH Zürich and EPF
Lausanne opportunities arise to develop and mold this tool – beyond the
role models. What are the key assets of alumni networks? What is Best
Practice? What services do current organizations offer? What services
should they offer, what has been tried and did not work?
10:00 – 10:30 Coffee & nET(H)working break

10:30 – 11:10 Moving Talent – Moving Knowledge: Brain-Drain vs.
Knowledge Mobility: How do we manage knowledge and people
Christian Simm (Swiss Science & Technology Consul), Eckhardt Schroeter
(University of California, Berkeley – German Scholar Organization),
Karena Strella (Egon Zehnder International)
State-funded talent leaves the home country to pursue academic research
and careers abroad. Further, companies transfer their executives to gain
experience and mobilize knowledge. Not all return to their home country.
In addition, we find that in-house knowledge rests with the individual
and not with the organization – be it here or afar. Do we simply export
the best talent without return? What are the key considerations and
milestones in pursuing a global career? What solutions and tools have
been found to mobilize people and share knowledge across continents and
oceans?
11:10 – 11:30 Coffee & nET(H)working break

11:30 – 12:00 TBA – Konrad Osterwalder (ETH Zürich)

12:00 – 13:30 Luncheon Keynote: UC Berkeley and its Alumni Heritage

and science: Alinghi and the EPFL

Jan-Anders Månson (EPFL)
On its first entry, the Swiss America’s Cup Challenge swept the Louis
Vuitton and the America’s Cup. Executed with Swiss precision in its Swiss
way attracting the best talent. A unique look behind the scenes will show
the science and entrepreneurial talent that made the success possible.
