Dear all,
I am a post-doctoral fellow and will be moving to Worcester/MA
with my wife in October 2003. We are currently trying to figure out
which type of health insurance we can get - and it seems to be
fairly complicated.
The main problem: the US embassy in Bern has told us that we
need to maintain our residency (Wohnsitz or Heimatgemeinde) in
Switzerland for the duration of the J1-visa. On the other hand,
Switzerland wants us to de-register as we are leaving for more
than 6 months. If we keep our residency in Switzerland, our helath
insurance company (CSS) has told us that we need to maintain
(and pay...) the obligatory health insurance and we won't be able to
join their international insurance (IHP of CSS). This would mean
that we need to pay for health insurance in the US AND in CH.
Is there anyone out there who is living in the US with a J-1 visa and
has lived in the Wallis before moving to the US (as there may even
be cantonal differences here...)? How did you resolve this
dilemma?
