Finding good child care:
Ask for how long in average people are employed at a place until they leave.
The shortest I heard was less than 1 year and the best was: Some people worked here for more than 5 years.
This is the most important question. Don't get blinded with: Every day we have a program including
all these activities... Your son does not need a programmed day at this age.

Waiting List:
The best daycare in town (I am in Austin TX) is at the University of Texas. The waiting list is 2 years!

We have found, after looking at about 10 day care centers, a great family/home day care place. Home daycare is
good until the age of 3 years. Meals are included. I think my son is being fed well. However you need to take a look at the menu list which daycare centers need to write as far as I know (Tax deduction for them selves).

I have not hired a baby sitter but will start paying some money to the graduate students working in my lab which I like.
Find a baby-sitter with a certificate from a hospital for first aide. This shows she/he took a class especially if they are young. A lot of undergraduate students will do baby sitting. Discuss the opportunity to cook or eat whatever they find in your fridge if you want.

Cheap toys:
Great used toy stores can be found in the US. For cheap you can get the best toys. The same for clothing or shoes.
Search in the yellow pages for 'used toys' or 'toy depot'.

Good luck. I hope California is spending more Tax money on daycare than Texas. I pay $450.- which is half of the rent for a little 2 bedroom house here.
