You may have recently received a letter about «SwissTalents», the
worldwide directory of expatriated scientists, be they Swiss or friends
of Switzerland. You may even have already registered your profile. Then
please discard this information.
But if you are not yet a SwissTalents member, please :
- find attached a MS Word98 file with an updated description of
SwissTalents
- for those not equipped to read this file, find below its
text-version
- be aware that starting very soon only SwissTalents members will
have free copies of the magazine "Vision - Made in Switzerland" sent to
them on a regular basis
- note that SwissTalents will replace the existing Swiss Scientists'
Directory in North America
- take advantage of "eNews - the free electronic newsletter on
science, technology, innovation and education, in and around
Switzerland", sent by email 1-3 times per month to its subscribers
(details on the SwissTalents Website)
- discover the new page «Swiss Jobs» ...
For those worried about privacy issues, you can register your personal
profile but decide that it is not publicly accessible (i.e. only the
Swiss Science Counselors will be able to see it).
So please take a few minutes to register at :

> The objectives of SwissTalents
SwissTalents has a number of aims, for instance :
- to reveal the often unrecognized potential of these expatriates and
their skills. For instance a Swiss businessman travelling abroad might
plan to meet pre-selected members of SwissTalents as part of his
programme. An employer looking for a specialist with international
experience might include SwissTalents and its Search function among his
head-hunting tools;
- to assist these talented people in setting up their own networks ?
subject-related and/or regional communities of the kind established by
Swiss scientists living around San Francisco bay;
- to benefit from the ideas of these specialists who, because of their
attachment to their country and the fresh perspective they have gained
from living abroad, are often able to make constructive and innovative
contributions to current debates;
- to enable Science Counsellors to offer various services to this
virtual community (the Counsellors who run the network have access to
full personal profiles, and are of course bound to treat this
information in strict confidence).
> The information required
When they register their personal profil at the SwissTalents website
future members are asked to be as precise and exhaustive as possible in
describing their training, experience, professional activity and skills.
They can include their curriculum vitae (resume), and later on update
their personal profile at any time. Using a special code, members also
decide what part of their personal profile should be accessible to the
general public. Only they have access to this profile thanks to a user
name and password.
> SwissTalents : a mine of skills
Direct access to the skills listed under SwissTalents is gained using
the Search function. Given that the lingua franca of the network is
English and that the search engine works through all the fields of every
profile, a key word can be located wherever it appears, under name of
employer, description of activities, CV and so on. Test the profile of
the fictitious Jay Trouvé, which serves as an example of the kind of
information available !
> Member services
Members of SwissTalents currently have access to the following services:
- they can subscribe to the electronic newsletter eNews, distributed
bi-monthly by e-mail. This publication contains brief news items about
science, technology, education and innovation in Switzerland, with
hyperlinks to fuller sources of information. eNews is produced in
collaboration with the publishers ScienceCom AG;
- they can use the SwissTalents Forum to exchange ideas, make proposals,
take part in debates and surveys, set up networks, etc.;
- they have direct access to ScienceJobs (www.sciencejobs.ch), "the
academic job market in Switzerland" via the Internet;
- they are included in activities organized by Science and Technology
Counselors, receiving invitations to conferences and meetings with
officials, being put in touch with Swiss visitors, being asked to help
draw up position papers, etc.;
- four times a year, they receive free of charge the international
version of the magazine "Vision ? Science and Innovation Made in
Switzerland".
This range of services is likely to be extended as time goes by.
