Hello everyone

I plan to apply to a Masters program beginning Fall 2002. I'll be traveling with my wife, she doesn't intend to study during this time.
I would prefer to have a J-1 visa, in order for my wife to be able to work in the US if she wishes.
Now, do I have the liberty of asking for a J-1 visa, or are J-1 visas restricted in some way?
Do J-1 visas have any shortcomings?
