Listers,

I was recently initiated to a southern card game called Rook. It is a lot
of fun, and, strangely enough, is very similar to our national favorite,
Jass.

Playing cards with relatives here reminded me of how much I miss playing
Jass with my parents and friends in Switzerland. In particular, I was
thinking of my Grand-Ma, who at 91 years old is still a terrific Jass
opponent, but doesn't have the opportunity to play very often anymore.

To make a long story short, does anyone know if there is an online Jass or
Rook game available? Or would there be anyone with some time & willing to
get a try at it? I suppose that shouldn't be too complex for one of you
Java whiz kids. As for me, I am somewhat stuck in a time warp and keep
programming in C, C++, Perl and Tcl/Tk... But I'd be willing to help as
much as I can!

>From San Francisco, I could play Jass with Grandma (after buying her a
little computer), and with my friends & relatives in South Carolina and
Florida! Of course we would open the "game room" to all the friends on the
swiss-list --maybe even organize an online Jass tournament!

~Pierre

PS: Rook is a 2, 3, 4 or 5-player game. The cards have no figures. Instead,
they are simply numbered 1 through 14, and the colors are red, green, black
and yellow. There is a unique "super-card" showing a crow and that one is
called "the Rook". Unlike Jass, there are no announces. You can't play trump
whenever you like, but only when you don't have the color that the trick
started with (therefore it is very good to be short-suited). This little
difference actually changes considerably the overall game's strategy. There
is also a bidding contest at the beginning of each game which makes things
very insteresting (like at "le Roi"). Ah, one last thing: the 2-player
version, unlike the one I remember for Jass, is extremely challenging and
interesting. Of course I also taught my friends to play Jass --they became
quite good at it and loved it!
