Space exploration develops many technologies which later can find
applications on Earth. Straight from the labs of Switzerland's two
Federal Institutes of Technology, ETHZ and EPFL, we will have on hand
three robot prototypes developed for space exploration that also have
significant terrestrial applications. They illustrate one of
Switzerland’s newest leading trends: small flight devices.
The Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL) at ETHZ, Zürich will present two
prototypes: one with a 3.2 m wingspan and a weight of 2.6 kg that was
successfully tested during an autonomous solar-powered flight lasting
5 hours; the other one is an autonomous helicopter that has been
miniaturized so that it can fly and self-navigate in cluttered
environments.
The Laboratory of Intelligent Systems (LIS) at EPFL, Lausanne, will
present a 10 g microflyer. It demonstrated full autonomous flight in
an office-sized arena using a mere 100 pixels, 2 rate gyros and a
miniature anemometer.
This event is part of the ThinkSwiss (www.thinkswiss.org) program.

«« TV 2.0 - Content in a Multimedia World »»
Do-it-yourself videos on YouTube, virtual TV stations in Second Life,
internet TV stations like Revision3: How will good old television fit
in this ever changing multimedia world? What kind of content will
attract future viewers? How and where will it be viewed? And how much
say will viewers have in shaping their TV programs ?
Want to know more? Join us for a round-table conducted by Robert
Scoble, VP of Media Development at PodTech.network with guest panelists:
     * Harry Fuller - TV veteran and Internet TV pioneer (TechTV)
     * Michael Gold - Senior Research Engineer at SRI International
     * Gregory Kennedy - Creative Director at Millions of Us
     * Bernard Rappaz - Editor in Chief TSR Multimedia (French Swiss
TV).

«« Fire Arts & Burning Desires (at Burning Man) »»
In a collaboration between Burning Man, Leonardo Journal and swissnex
San Francisco, an evening symposium will be presented by several
Burning Man fire artists who will discuss the use of their work with
fire as a creative medium. From a pyrrhic highlight to a transcendent
interaction, when is fire an appropriate part of a sculptural
statement? How to use fire in a safe way for both the artist and the
audience? Learn about the behind the scenes of previous Burning Man
fire art spectacles.
Speaker attending the symposium will include Crimson Rose (The Fire
Goddess), The Flaming Lotus Girls, (TBA), Bill Codding (The
Burninator), Wally Glen (The Zen Fire Garden) and DaveX who will
discuss the safety parameters of working with fire in an artistic way.

«« High Fashion in Equations »»
As part of ThinkSwiss – Brainstorm the future – swissnex San
Francisco is proud to welcome Professor Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann of
MIRALab, a laboratory of the University of Geneva internationally
known for exceptional computer simulations of the moving human body.
Prof. Magnenat-Thalmann will treat us to a virtual fashion show by
presenting the film "High Fashion in Equations", followed by a talk
on “3D Computer Simulation of Textiles and Clothing".
Prof. Magnenat-Thalmann and her team combined mathematics, fashion
and computer graphic components to develop a revolutionary computer
program called the "Fashionizer" that creates a true-to-reality
virtual fashion show out of a simple sketch – without actually having
the dress physically made. Well-known clothing designers like Zara
and Mango are already using this program to make their work in the
textile industry more efficient. "High Fashion in Equations" film was
presented this year at Siggraph in San Diego, one of largest
International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive
Techniques.
