Title: Funding Strategies: From 0 to A
Date: April 3, 2002 at 7:00pm
Location: Wilson Sonsini, 950 Page Mill Rd., Palo Alto, CA
Cost: $20, at the door.
The speakers will discuss various funding strategies that they have seen
implemented or would recommend for getting from conception to a Series A
round. Included in the discussion will be recommendations for what
should be developed prior to seeking the series A round operationally
and technically, as well as how to prioritize these
efforts.
Some of the issues we hope to cover in this program include:
o Is a business plan necessary? The necessity of being clear on business
and revenue model in order to come to a financing strategy
o How to decide which financing source is for you? (SBIR/SBA) vs.
Private/Angel vs. Venture vs. Lease/Loan facilities)
o What are the short and long-term implications of different finance
sources for the operation and model?
o What should be the weighting of the various private and state/federal
funding sources?
o Bootstrapping - What is it? When, why and how?
o Controlling: Monitoring expenses, managing expectations and hopes.
o Midcourse corrections: how to manage the worst-case scenario.
o Venture funding: Matching the deal to the investor: Positioning &
Strategies to attract the right VC
o Making the pitch with the right attitude, numbers, company,
presentation and answers
o The process of raising funds: Meetings, letters, memos and lawyers
o Things to stay away from: Should not's and must not's
Networking session will follow.
Panelists:
J. Leighton Read, M.D. joined Alloy Ventures as a General Partner in
October 2001, after 14 years as a biotechnology entrepreneur and
investor. He co-founded Affymax NV, under the direction of Dr. Alejandro
Zaffaroni. He later founded Aviron (NASDAQ: AVIR), where he served as
Chairman and CEO until 1999 and continues as a director. Leighton was
also a partner in Interhealth Limited, an investment partnership focused
on life sciences. He received a BS from Rice University in Psychology
and Biology (1973), an MD from the University of Texas Health Science
Center at San Antonio (1976) and completed internal medicine training at
the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston where he held appointments at
the Harvard Medical School and School of Public Health. He has served as
director for a number of other biotechnology companies, on the executive
committee of the Biotechnology Industry Association and has won several
awards as co-inventor of technology underlying the Affymetrix
GeneChip(tm).
Cathy Crane Moley, Senior VP, Strategic Development, Entelos, Inc.,
leads Entelos activities in mergers and acquisitions, and directs the
development of Entelos intellectual property. She has over 15 years of
healthcare experience, ranging from sales and marketing to business
development and finance. Before joining Entelos, she held management
positions at such organizations as Khepri Pharmaceuticals (now AxyS),
Mayfield Fund, Advanced Cardiovascular Systems (a division of Eli Lilly
and Company), and Kendall McGaw Laboratories (a division of American
Hospital Supply). Ms. Crane Moley holds a B.A. in molecular biology from
the University of California at Berkeley and an M.B.A. from Stanford
University Graduate School of Business.
