my experience with wire transfers was actually very good. That was between
St.Gallische Kantonal Bank and Fidelity. They only charged me $11 for $10,000
which is really nothing, comparing what Western Union charges.
Swiss Banks are not very excited about Checks, since they have to send them
back to the US for deposit. Back in Switzerland I received several checks and
it was always quite expensive to deposit them (~sFr 50.00)

if this happens I would recommend to change the bank or use a investor service
like Fidelity
