I was in a similar situation, except that I am Swiss. My first funding was a
swiss SNF fellowship and I got the two years rule requirement. After two
years I was funded by the US and my next extended J1 visa did not have the
two years requirement. However, you are still subjected to the two years
requirement once you got it, even if you got it only once. When I applied
for my H1 visa I had to get a waiver for the two years requirement. This was
easy to do but you need to get it. If you plan to stay longer in the US,
apply for the waiver early enough as this process can take a few months.
