Marco, I used to be visting scholar in the U.S. in business and then was
on the job market. I was invited for US job interviews and learned the
following:
1. To get a job at the top universities, you don't formally apply but get
introduced to the faculty by your sponsor, by his or her network. You may also
meet potential faculty at conferences during your PhD.
2. For lower tier universities, people do formally apply. What helps is a
sponsor in the US with links.
3. Moving on to a better university once you are affiliated in the US is
difficult. What counts is the position you get when getting into the US system.
You might try to get a name elsewhere and then get back into the U.S.
system.
4. Publications in A-journals are the entry ticket. Before you get a job at
a top university as an assistant prof. you must already have proven that you
can produce a steady stream of top publications.
