From swissemb.org (Embassy of Switzerland in the US)

"Swiss citizens who hold a green card or a US visa will be able to travel
outside of the USA and come back with their old passport until it expires.

Swiss citizens who do not reside in the USA who want to come to the US as
tourists or on business under the visa waiver program (max. 90 days) will need
either a machine-readable passport or a US visa as of October 1, 2003."
