Never take anything for granted with the INS. :-/

AFAIK you won't have an interview at the embassy: you "just" need an appointment
so that they can process your visa (stick it into your passport). IIRC they
said they would accept "a few" people without appointment but I'm not sure if
this is still (or even was) the case.

Since IANAL you'll have to verify this information yourself
