Hi,
I hope that everyone is doing fine and wish you a Happy New Year!
Some relatives of mine are about to leave California back to Switzerland
after a short vacation here. They have purchased several items, and paid a
non-negligeable sales tax on some of these items. I was told by some
people that it is not possible to recover the sales tax paid in
California, upon leaving the country. Has any of you officially inquired
about it?
To be more illustrative about what I mean, this is how it used to work in
Europe. If you buy for example a computer in France or Germany (not really
a bargain anyway!), you can claim the sales tax at the French or German
customs at the Swiss border. You then get an immediate refund (or maybe
later in the mail). Then you cross the Swiss border, and decide for
yourself if you are going to declare the item and have to pay the
Swiss sale tax! Sometimes you can't hide it!
So, I was just curious if someone had an idea about whether this would
work with the California, although I would not be surprised if this were
not possible.
Have a good day!
Marc-Olivier
