Swissair is in Nachlasstundung, in German, I don't know the English term,
but it means, that they are allowed with someone who has been appointed to
control everything (Nachlassverwalter) to go on with business for a certain
amount of time, i guess right now around December or so. The Nachlassverwalter
will make public in the SHAB (journal of the swiss commerce register) when
creditors can call and where and the amount of their credits, eg you with the
flight ticket. since there are probably a lot of people with more money etc. in
credit your chance to get a lot out of it is very small. and it is not very
sure when this all will take place.
as to the new airline, since it will be a new business, they don't have to
take your ticket, unless they do it out of goodwill.
as to other solutions: maybe you have a chance to annull your ticket,
especially if it is only one for december, maybe you want to check with your travel
agency. especially if you have a package deal with them.
i was lucky, STA travel managed to annull mine and change it to a lufthansa
one. also, some airlines give a special reduction with swissair tickets.
so much as from the swiss perspective, sorry i have no idea about the US
one.
