Dear Ralf,
The 41.5% is the maximum tax rate (it might have changed since I moved
out of Switzerland in 2004), just as it is 35% for federal purposes in
the US and 9.3% for California.
You are right that unlike the US, the canton's and commune tax rates are
more important than the Federal tax rate. It varies a lot amongst
cantons. For example, Geneva and Zurich have highest tax rates and
Schwytz....In general, depending on personal situations and income level,
the tax expense in Switzerland is similar to the US.
